Yellow Wallpaper Symbolism Biography
Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story with its symbolic yellow wallpaper is about a woman trapped inside a marriage and who cannot find adequate artistic release. The narrator in the story slowly loses touch with reality while paradoxically coming closer with her inner world as she acknowledges the imprisonment her husband John has imposed upon her. The yellow wallpaper, originally an ugly nuisance, takes on disturbing images as the narrator finds herself fall deeper into depression. Only when she makes the meaningful connection between herself and the wallpaper is she able assert herself by declaring to her husband, “I’ve got out at last…you can’t pull me back” (182).
